This important message contains information about free meals for students, how your child can still purchase ala carte items for a fee and where to find lunch menus.

Free Meal Information

For the 2023-24 school year, the State of Michigan created the Michigan School Meals Program allowing all school meals to be free to all students, no matter their free/reduced meal status. (Full meals are free - ala carte items are not.) However, filling out a free/reduced meal form is very important to families who are eligible and for the District to receive funding.

Family Benefits: Qualifying for Free/Reduced Meals

When families qualify for free/reduced price meals, they are also eligible for the following benefits:

  • Reduced Summer School fees
  • Reduced Athletics Resource fees for students grades 6-12
  • Reduced field trip fees
  • Reduced AP testing fees
  • Potential additional benefits for Bridge Cards/P-EBT
  • Potential support for household cable/internet
  • Potential programs that provide holiday support

Berkley School District Benefits:  Qualifying Free/Reduced Meal Families

Did you know the federal government uses the number of free/reduced meal applications to determine how much money the district receives in grant funding?

  • Berkley School District becomes eligible for Federal funds (Title I) when qualifying families fill out their free/reduced meal applications. If families do not fill out their forms, the District is at risk of losing funding for staff who provide critical services to our students.

Visit the Berkley School District’s Food Service webpage to view the paper application, Federal Income Guidelines, and Frequently Asked Questions.

Apply for free/reduced meals through the MISTAR Parent Portal.

Ala Carte Items

Students are welcome to bring meals from home and purchase ala carte items as needed. Ala Carte items will still be offered at each school, however, they are not included in the Free Meals program. In order to do this, each student will need funds added to their food service account, or money sent in to pay at the time of purchase. Families can add funds by logging into MISTAR Parent Portal and clicking on “Click to add funds to food service accounts.”

Milk, for example, can be purchased for 75¢.

If a student would like a second meal, those will require payment as well.

Lunch Menus

Lunch menus and detailed nutritional information can be found on the District’s Nutrislice webpage and app. Nutrislice contains details for each meal including ingredients.

Lunch menu PDFs are posted monthly to the Food Services webpage as well.
