DID YOU KNOW.....?

The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program operating in more than 9,000 schools across Texas. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to more than 3 million Texas school children each school day. In 1998, Congress expanded the National School Lunch Program to include reimbursement for snacks served to children in after school educational and enrichment programs to include children through 18 years of age.

It is recommend that no more than 30 percent of calories come from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat. Regulations also establish a standard for school lunches to provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories. School lunches must meet federal nutrition requirements, but decisions about the specific foods to serve and their preparation are made locally.

Navasota ISD is a part of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program. This means that we have strict guidelines that we must adhere to on every item that we serve to your child. Did you know that most Child Nutrition Departments are self-supporting? What this means is that these departments pay their own payroll, they pay their own expenses and they pay for everything that pertains to the Child Nutrition Department. Navasota ISD is one of these Child Nutrition Departments that is self-supporting. We do not use revenue from the taxes that are paid, our revenue is from reimbursement rates from the meals served and the revenue from ala-carte and snack sales.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. All meals, foods and beverages are prepared and served by qualified child nutrition professionals. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.
