What would one be doing?

As part of its efforts to ensure kids have access to healthy meals during the summer months, we are pleased to announce summer meal sites in Marion, Hiawatha, and Cedar Rapids will again be serving kids and teens free meals. All kids and teens 18 and under can receive meals free of charge, no registration is needed. Meals must be eaten on-site.

The summer months are already one of the hungriest times of year for many kids. The need will be even greater this summer as the nation continues to grapple with the pandemic.

The Summer Meals program is funded by the USDA and run by school districts and local organizations, and sites can be found throughout the community. Families can text “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 304-304 and type in a zip code to find nearby summer meal sites, along with operating days and times or click on the following link: www.fns.usda.gov/summer/sitefinder.
No application, registration, or proof of residency or citizenship is required at sites.

Now that the school year has come to a close we would like to thank Dr. Batenhorst for his years of service to our district. Dr. B had a busy last week of school. He kicked off the week by celebrating the Mount Vernon Class of 2024. He even donned a graduation gown to show his support for the students. Throughout the week he was spotted all over the district. He helped out in the middle school kitchen, he looked at his celebration rock at Washington Elementary, he watched students set off rockets in Mrs. Winder’s science class, he made sure his flowers were looking good, he was still diligently working at his desk, he drove around in his car a little bit, and he hung out with Roscoe the therapy dog. He celebrated the retirement of Denny Gross, Tim Larson, Margo Massey, and Marcia Purington and congratulated all of the staff on a great year. Last but not least, he was snowed on by Mrs. Rowe’s 4th grade class!
Thanks for a great run (Get it? He’s a guy who likes to run…) Dr. B. and enjoy retirement!
