Our crew was light this morning, with only 10 students attending. Even with a small group, we still did some pretty big things and our day was packed full!![]()

We started our morning learning Aspen and how she became a STARBASE educator - and how your interests can play into the type of career you choose as you progress thru school.![]()

We then went into the computer lab and used the CAD program to design our own dog tags. They are currently being printed and we will get them all next week!![]()

Then, we took a slight detour - we were invited to watch the very newly acquired Military Work Dogs training with their handlers. We talked to a Seargant who explained the Work Dog program and talked about his career journey in the military. We were directed to refrain from taking pictures, but as we drove to and from the on-base site, we were able to see additional dogs in training, not only Military Work Dogs, but also Police Dogs as well.![]()

Arriving back to our classroom, we had Assistant Cheif Brandon (who led our fire and rescue tour last week), come in and talk about fire science and his career path as well.![]()

After lunch, we began work on 'Pop Goes the Fizzzz'. Students explored different types of energy, and then applied what they learned to make predictions about their "rocket" launch! Students tested their predictions and used Alka-Seltzer tabs to create pressure to launch their rockets (small tubes).![]()

We followed that with more exploration into energy - discovering the difference between Potential Energry (chemical, gravitational, and nuclear), Mechanical, and Kinetic Energy (sound, electrical, radiant, and thermal). Students watched a short clip of a Rube Goldberg Machine that was designed by student of similar age. And then they did some hands-on experiments to learn more about energy, in preparation for next week's final class.![]()

It was another wonderful day of learning and exploring at STARBASE!

Today's mission began with a tour of the Fire Dept. Students got to see the crash trucks, sit in one of the vehicles, try on an air pack, and tour the dispatch room and sleeping quarters. They then got to see one of the men slide down the pole!![]()

We then toured the base on our way back to the classroom.![]()

Once back at STARBASE, students jumped right into working in the CAD program.![]()

We had lunch and some downtime to recharge for the 2nd half of our day.![]()
![]()
The afternoon consisted of an experiment of sink or float - where students had to make connections to mass, density, and volume. Following the whole class experiment, each student then competed to see who could get a clay boat to float - and how many metal nuts it could hold before sinking! The winning students had 14 and 15; and Mrs. Pop broke the teacher record of 20 with a whopping 23 before taking on water!![]()

We wrapped up with a density lesson using different salt solutions and 'layering' them. Student figured out which solutions were more or less dense, ordered them, then calculated the percentage of salt in each one!![]()

The bus ride is lllllooooonnnnngggg, but totally worth it!
